| From: Bill | Fantastic. Can spot RF up on a pole, on an electric meter, off a computer... If used with headphones it is incredibly sensitive. Very good instruction book too. I'm contemplating a modification to add
terminals so I could try to also read the output with a DMM. Then it could be even more sensitive? But in most situations you won't need that. |
| From: Bill | | To follow up on this great product, I did find one glitch. With some strong signals, the headphones sometimes get into some kind of resonance: the sound is loud but the meter reading goes to zero. In this situation unplug the headphones to locate the source. |
| From: CHARLES J. SHAW KB3BTO | After 3 years of intermittent RFI and the growing frustration of facing the RFI for a fourth year, I purchased the MFJ-856 and was able to pinpoint the exact utility pole that was the source of the RFI within minutes. Previously, using more generic and home brewed methods, I only established that the RFI was an external presence.
A call to my local electrical company representative, his verification of my findings, and a work order to correct the problem swiftly followed.
The instructions for the MFJ-856 were precise and the assembly took only minutes. My only regret is that I didn't purchase this wonderful little device much, much sooner. Indeed, it was money well spent. MFJ has saved the day. |
| From: Bill | | I have found amazing sensitivity by amplifying the audio output. Now I can locate distant sources easily. But for typical power lines it works great out of the box. There are times when I wish it was less sensitive because the meter pegs if you are near a really bad pole, and then it's hard to get the direction (which also is hard when there are 2 sources... in some areas many poles are bad due to old wood and loose hardware). |
