Customer Reviews for the MFJ-9440.

From: Bob Carpenter KB4WEC
I've had my 9440 for 4 years, never had a problem. The standard report I get is a question again "how much power I'm running?" Then I get an audio report that would make the big rigs turn yellow with jealousy! I've worked Alaska and Hawaii on 40 Meters with this little rig on SSB! I run the little beast mobile using a 40 Meter ham stick and have no problem with SSB or CW contacts. It is a lot of fun as a camping rig with a little 7ah battery, 102 foot wire and small MFJ tuner. Can't go wrong.

I've had the MFJ 9440 for about two weeks. If I can hear them, they can hear me. And I've heard stations in Ireland, Spain, Brazil, Chile, Canada and bunch of other countries. During contests, the pileups are heavy but with patience, they can be worked. I find the only problem is when some guys use their RF Gain control as a squelch but even then the 9440 can be heard. In nets, there is general disbelief that I'm using a rig with about 5 watts average power, many of them say I'm as strong as others with 100W and I'm sure it's partially due to the speech processing in the 9440. Antennas used are the B&W folded dipole and a GAP Titan. Usually, the B&W is used because it is quieter by not being omnidirectional as much as the Titan. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the 9440, for now it is the only rig I'm using on 40 because it is so much fun. Other rigs I have are the Swan 500CX and a Heath HW-8. The 9440 with the CW board is great! (Note that I do not work for MFJ... HI)

The 9440 has been in use for a number of years. I've taken it camping using a lawn mower battery, solar panel, the small MFJ tuner and an MFJ 40 meter antenna. I pitch the antenna up in the trees and power up. As others have said, if you can hear other SSB stations you can generally work them. Mine has the CW kit installed and it works well in that mode. The rig is durable, handling the camping grime, dampness, cold and or heat well. Yep, contacts are a surprise because I'm only running a few watts out.

I have had so much fun with this radio. It is simple to use and packs a punch. With only 10 watts or so output, I've had many comments as to how good the audio is. The processor they built into the radio makes the signal appear more than just 10 watts. For the most part if I can hear them, they will hear me. As for the receiver, it is every bit as good as my Icom 738. Beautiful audio and plenty of it. Support from MFJ as been almost to good to be true. They are a great bunch of folks to work with. Bottom line, I can't say enough good things about this radio or MFJ. You just need to try one, you'll be hooked.
