| Customer Reviews for the MFJ-974B.
| From: Norman Sullivan NZ5L | | I have owned this tuner for about 3 years now, and it still works as new. In my opinion, it is the best of its type, within the 300W power limit. It will easily match center-fed antennas, but also is useful for off-center-feds if they are fed with a balanced line. (It will also match a coax-fed antenna, but I have not used it for that purpose so can't honestly comment). Tuning is smooth, and the capacitors are wide range. The built-in meter is very useful, and also has a peak reading position, as well as a QRP setting. I used the Johnson matchbox about 30 years ago, believe me, this new version is way better and more versatile. If you want to use a balanced line type antenna, and are not using a linear amplifier, this is definitely the way to go. |
| From: Norman Sullivan NZ5L | I have owned my 974B for 5 years now, and am still amazed how versatile it is. This past weekend our club had a Field Day set-up and the 974B was coupled to a 70' wire doublet through about 40' of ladder line. All bands from 40 and up were tuned with very low SWR, even including 6 Meters, on which several contacts were made. Less well known, perhaps, is that this tuner will match off-center fed antennas equally well. The usual 1/3 - 2/3 offset matches up very well, but an antenna fed only 20% from one end tuned and worked equally as well (14' and 54' legs) and has produced many contacts.
New hams especially should consider this type of antenna, as a good performing multi-bander has never been easier. NZ5L. |
